Biography: Jolie Lesperance

Capoeira

Jolie Lesperance began her formal dance training at the age of four at Winnipeg's School of Contemporary Dancers in creative movement. She continued to train in ballet exclusively there, until twelve years of age. At fourteen, she discovered modern dance and jazz. At eighteen, she joined WCD's Senior Professional Program and received her degree from the University Of Winnipeg. During her time there she explored many forms of dance and movement such as; contact improvisation, African, ballroom and belly-dancing; yoga, Pilates, and qi gong. She has also maintained a parallel career performing as an actress in musical, dramatic and comedic roles in various independent productions throughout the city and country.

Jolie has taught at Rising Star Dance Academy, Osborne Street Dance Club, Monica's Danz Gym and the School of Contemporary Dancers.

Three years ago, at Monica's Danz Gym Jolie first discovered Capoeira; studying with Mestrando Indio, Professor Titela and Graduado Tom, all from Acre, Brazil. She has performed in a multitude of demos and shows for Grupo Viva Capoeira and has traveled to Toronto to train with Mestrando Bola. She is currently a yellow belt in the Viva Capoeira system.

For the past year, she has also begun to train in Praying Mantis Kung Fu with Sifu Joshua Schafer. She is a yellow belt in this system as well.

Jolie is definitely looking forward to sharing her varied knowledge and experience with the students at the showcase this year.
